Beth Marcil lives in a world or color and texture; light and shadow. She weaves these elements into a unique visual tapestry that communicates the vibrancy, passion and sometimes the whimsy of the world she sees around her. This vision is a dynamic and evolving one that Beth has sought to share with us in her work.

Travel and exposure to other cultures greatly inspires Marcil’s work. Her travels include South America, Asia and most recently West Africa where she studied dance and immersed herself in the local cultures of Senegal, Guinea and Mali. “These people have a remarkable passion for life that is powerfully expressed in their dance, music and visual art forms. I find fascinating their deep sense of community and the ability to maintain harmony within their communities. Conveying that sense of community passionate life force is a theme that comes through much of my work. I love to visually interpret not only the vivid colors and textures and energy of foreign marketplaces, for example, but more importantly the essential spirit that brings a people or a place to life.” Adventure, exploration and experimentation are what make’s Beth tick and are vital to every aspect of her life.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Beth’s formal art education began at Columbia College and the University of South Carolina where she majored in graphic design and photography. Her passion for the richness and the energetic colors of nature began while doing her post graduate work at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida where she was surrounded by a lush tropical environment.

Beth came to the islands from a commercial art background. It was a giant step from the position of creative director for Kaplan Press, a publisher of educational materials for children, to the life of an independent artist living in Maui. Maui, the island life and the ethnic diversity, which is Hawaii, has further influenced Beth’s growth as an artist.

Beth Marcil and her works have been featured in such publications as Art News, Pacific Art and Travel, Aloha Magazine, Spirit of Aloha and Real Estate Maui Style. Her pieces have been exhibited nationally, in statewide invitational and juried shows and found in the collections of Mari Winsor Pilates, Ugo Jacuzzi and Senator Ted Kaplan. Beth has been a cover artist for a number of Aloha Airlines publications and provided artwork for posters and literature for the Maui Writer’s Conference. Her work may be seen at the Maui Marketplace Kau Kau Corner. She is published by Island Heritage.
